Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s central leader and former Sindh governor Imran Ismail said there was no single piece of government machinery to help people in the disastrous situation in Karachi after this week’s torrential rains.

“Ministers and government offices were celebrating the Eid in their hometowns and left the city’s residents at the mercy of the rains,” he said while addressing a press conference. PTI candidate for NA-245 by-polls Mahmood Maulvi, MNA Aftab Siddiqui, MPA Jamail Siddiqui and other leaders accompanied him.

He said the partnership of the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Mutahaid Qaumi Movement-Pakistan was responsible for the drowning of the city. “Both parties are doing nothing but blaming each other.”

Ismail said the PTI’s federal government had given Rs35 billion to clear four major nullahs from encroachments and reconstructed them. “But the PPP-led provincial government failed to perform its task of improving solid waste disposal and cleaning minor nullahs,” said Ismail, who has recently been appointed the PTI’s additional secretary-general.

He said Karachi’s residents were now questioning the performance of the PPP-led Sindh government ruling the province for the past 14 years. He said MQM-P leader and former mayor Wasim Akhtar was still confused why his party left the PTI and “joined hands with thieves”.

The former governor said that the Pakistan Muslime League-Nawaz should stop fake sympathy with the Karachi people. Imran Khan’s representatives were present in Karachi and the PTI workers were on the roads helping the residents, he said.
