LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has described her husband Captain (retd) Safdar’s remarks about women as hurtful after he faced widespread criticism on social media over his controversial comments.
In a post on social media platform X, CM Maryam reacted to her husband’s statement, describing the situation as heartbreaking and referring to the silent struggles women face in their personal lives.
“This is the silent battle a woman, a wife, fights behind closed doors. She has to remain courageous even when she feels she is falling apart. Some battles are fought silently, and some wounds remain invisible,” she wrote.
The controversy erupted after Captain (retd) Safdar made controversial remarks about women while addressing a Khatm-e-Nabuwwat conference in Chenab Nagar, Chiniot district, a day earlier.
During his speech, he praised the 1973 Constitution, describing it as sacred, and questioned whom lawmakers had sent to parliament, apart from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, to defend the finality of Prophethood and safeguard the Constitution.
Referring to criticism directed at Maulana Fazlur Rehman by a woman, Safdar said he had defended the JUI-F chief, describing him as a father figure.
Heartbreaking. 💔

He also compared the religious leader’s position to that of a father and said he regarded himself as occupying the place of Fazlur Rehman’s son.
However, his remarks took a controversial turn when he referred to a message he had allegedly received from a woman questioning his association with the JUI-F chief.
Responding to her, Safdar made remarks suggesting that if she had studied at a religious seminary, she would not have held the view that her body was her own.
He further said that a woman’s biological father, the person who gave her a daughter, and the person who provided her education would all be seated together on a throne on the Day of Judgment, adding that all three held a father-like position.
His comments triggered criticism on social media, prompting Maryam Nawaz to publicly express her reaction.
