Principal Postgraduate Medical Institute & Amir Uddin Medical College (PGMI/AMC), Prof. Dr. Sardar Muhammad Al-freed Zafar has said that kidney disease is a silent killer, it would be correct and one in every ten persons has a kidney disease which requires timely diagnosis and treatment.
He said that when the kidneys are not working properly, harmful toxins and excess fluids build up in the body, which may cause the symptoms of kidney failure. These symptoms can include high blood pressure, extreme tiredness and persistent headaches, swelling in the face and ankles, fluid retention and / or lower back pain.
Prof Dr. Sardar Muhammad Al-freed Zafar expressed these views while addressing a seminar organized at Lahore General Hospital (LGH) on Wednesday to highlight the prevalence of kidney diseases, prevention, diagnosis, importance and public awareness in the society in which professors, doctors, nurses, paramedics staff were present.
He said that the rate of kidney complications in men is increasing day by day, but women are the first to donate a kidney. He said that the campaign should be launched so that the young generation can be protected from this deadly disease.
Prof. Dr. Al-freed Zafar stressed that according to an estimate; more than 200,000 patients are being dialyses annually in Pakistan, which is a matter of concern. Prof. Dr. Gias-un-Nabi Tayyab, faculty members, doctors, nurses and paramedics were present on this occasion.
Addressing the seminar, Professor of Urology Dr. Khizar Hayat Gondal and Incharge Nephrology Dr. Yasir Hussain said that kidney is of utmost importance to human life as with kidney failure, human life is impossible. He said that most kidney stones are silent, which is only known on ultrasound report. Medical experts said that the stone is a treatable disease but if not diagnosed on time, the kidney will fail and the life will be at stake. They said that the citizen should not underestimate kidney pain, prostate, obstruction of urine flow and bladder disease and refrain from taking any self-medication.
Dr. Shah Jahan told the participants about the symptoms of kidney disease and more swelling on face and foot in the morning. He said that lack of sleep, loss of appetite, foam in the urine, bladder irritation and respiratory distress are main symptoms’ of it and diabetes and hypertension also cause kidney dysfunction. He said that in kidney diseases patients should refer to an authorized physician immediately and do not delay in medical examination and use less of greasy foods.
