Police in Islamabad continue to hunt down the public while the influential people using power and contacts keep harassing the ordinary citizens.
After 22-year old Osama Satti’s tragic and cold-blooded murder by police on Saturday, stories of the Islamabad police’s high-handedness are becoming subject of public debate and there is a demand that it should come to an end.
One such incident of police’s disregard for law took place on January 1, 2021 when a showroom owner was picked from the Blue Area by the Kohsar police and was kept in illegal custody for hours there. He was also abused, harassed and tortured.
According to details, Naveed Mudassar who has been in the business for the last 19 years and is running a showroom in the Blue Area had a car sale deal some two months back. However, the buyer, Imran one month after the purchase of the car, realized he had committed a mistake and demanded Naveed to return it. Upon his refusal, he got an FIR registered against him under 420 and other sections of PPC. Naveed as a preventive measure secured bail from the court of Additional District & Sessions Judge of Islamabad on Jan 1, until January 13.
The same day at around 2:45 p.m. Naveed was intercepted by the police when he was going to his showroom at the Faisal Avenue and they took him and his fellow colleague Amir Shah to the police station. “They behaved cordially and upon our producing the court order, let us go,” said Naveed.
However, that show of civility and politeness did not last long and police revisited him in the night of the same day when he was closing. This time Naveed was picked by the policemen who were in no good mood.
“They put me into a vehicle, kicked me, used foul language and upon my protest to tell me what my crime was, they simply told me they would let me know after some time. In the meanwhile, they kept punching me, kicking and torturing,” said Naveed. According to him, during that painful episode, they also deprived him of his cash around Rs275,000.
Later, they took him to the police station after taking rounds of the city and to bluff his drivers who were constantly chasing them. When we reached the police station, even the IO Sub Inspector Riaz and SHO Abdul Razzaq of Kohsar Police looked surprised why I was brought back to the police station.
Later, after keeping me for a couple of hours there, once again they let me go saying it was the result of ‘misunderstanding’, said Naveed.
While talking to Pakistan Observer, Naveed showed bruises on his face and injuries on his legs caused by the police as a result of that ‘misunderstanding.’ I am being chased by men in civil clothes and my whereabouts are bing constantly monitored, he said.
In an appeal to the Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Inspector General of Police Amir Zulfiqar Khan and other high-ups, Naveed Mudassar has requested the authorities to look into the matter as he was a law-abiding businessman and a tax payer. “I have never been wanted by police in any illegal activity all my life and I am wondering why this is being done by police that too in the federal capital,” said he. He also accused a senior police officer of collaborating with Imran who has filed a ‘fake’ case against him.
