Hurriyat leader and the Chairman of Kashmir Institute of International Relations (KIIR), Altaf Hussain Wani has urged the United Nations and the world leaders to help settle the Kashmir dispute so that permanent peace can be establish in the region.
Altaf Hussain Wani in a statement issued in Islamabad on the occasion of International Peace Day, today, underling the UN critical role in maintaining International peace, said that it was the prime responsibility of the highest forum to prevent conflicts, safeguard people’s fundamental rights and create a violence-free atmosphere where people could live without any fear.
Over the decades, Mr. Wani said that the UN had played a pivotal role in ending numerous conflicts but it had miserably failed to implement its own resolutions on Kashmir that called for holding a referendum in the region. “Had the UN implemented its proposed roadmap on Kashmir there would have been no bloodshed in the territory”, he added.
Highlighting the humanitarian aspect of the lingering dispute Mr. Wani said, “Since several decades people of Kashmir have been the worst victims of this long-drawn conflict; they are being killed.—KMS
