Pakistan on Friday set the illustrative wheat price at Rs4,500 per 40kg for 2027, up Rs1,000 from last year, to support farmers amid rising production costs.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the decision aims to encourage wheat cultivation, protect farmers’ financial interests and boost domestic production to strengthen food security.
Chairing the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the proposed rate was intended to help farmers cover rising agricultural expenses and earn reasonable profits while ensuring affordable wheat for consumers.
However, the announced price falls Rs500 short of the Rs5,000 per maund demanded by the Pakistan Kissan Ittehad, which has warned that rising input costs and inadequate returns could discourage farmers from cultivating wheat.
Shehbaz also reiterated that domestic wheat stocks were sufficient to meet national needs and warned against hoarding.
