ISLAMABAD – The 10th death anniversary of veteran journalist, scholar and founder of Pakistan Observer Zahid Malik was observed on Tuesday with Quran Khawani and Fateha, as members of the newspaper family gathered to remember a man whose vision continues to shape the institution he founded.
Quran Khawani was held in Islamabad, Lahore and other cities for his anniversary. Senior members of editorial and administrative teams, along with workers of Pakistan Observer, participated in the recitation of the Holy Quran and offered Fateha for the departed soul.
At his grave, colleagues and associates gathered in a solemn atmosphere to pray for Zahid Malik and reflect on his contributions to journalism, scholarship and public life. The gathering brought together those who had worked alongside him as well as members of the institution he left behind.
The observance carried particular significance as it marked a full decade since Zahid Malik passed away on September 1, 2016.
Ten years after his death, Zahid Malik remains a deeply remembered figure within the Pakistan Observer family. His vision of journalism as a responsibility towards society became one of the defining principles of the newspaper and continues to influence its editorial outlook.
Those attending the Quran Khawani recalled not only his role as the founder of Pakistan Observer but also his intellectual and religious contributions. He was widely recognised for combining his journalistic career with a lifelong interest in Islamic scholarship.
His major work, Mazameen-i-Quran-i-Hakeem, was a subject-wise compilation of Quranic verses that received international recognition and was translated into English, French and German. Through the work, Malik sought to organise a vast body of Quranic knowledge in a form that could be readily accessed and understood by ordinary readers.
He also authored Mazameen-i-Ahadees-e-Nabwi, reflecting his continued effort to make Islamic teachings accessible beyond traditional scholarly circles.
Malik sb. believed that knowledge carried a responsibility and that journalism should serve the public by informing, educating and contributing positively to society. Those principles became central to the newspaper he established.
As prayers were offered on his 10th death anniversary, the gathering is reminder that while a decade has passed since Zahid Malik’s death, his intellectual and journalistic legacy continues to endure.
