Social media giant X, Twitter unleashed a new feature that many users are calling unwanted as the “About This Account” section, now exposes country or region tied to every account.

As Elon Musk led company claims it’s meant to boost transparency and fight disinformation, users around the world are sounding the alarm.

Critics warn that feature could put people in countries with strict speech laws at risk of political retaliation. Others complain that VPN users are being falsely “outed,” potentially revealing personal locations without consent. Some users have even called it forced doxxing.

The backlash escalated when X briefly removed location data due to reliability issues, only to promise it would return “99.99% accurate” after an update. Now, VPN warnings pop up, and account locations shift depending on travel or temporary moves.

How to Update Your Country Setting

Your account’s country affects the content you see and helps X customize your experience. To change it:

Go to Your Account.
Click Account Information and enter your password.
Select Country from the options.
Choose the correct country from the drop-down menu.
Click Agree and Continue to save your changes.

Profile Location

Public and optional.
Shows others where you are or who you are.
Can be updated via Profile → Edit Your Profile.

Country Setting

Private and non-public.
Helps X customize content and features for you.
Can be changed under Account → Account Information → Country.

About This Account

Publicly visible if your account is public.
Determined from aggregated IP addresses.
To show or update: click the “joined” date on your profile → settings gear icon.
Issues can be reported through the same menu.
