MEXICO – An incident of harassment involving Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum occurred during her interaction with supporters, highlighting once again the widespread issue of gender-based violence in the country.
The international media reported that the incident took place on Tuesday when President Sheinbaum was heading to an event near the presidential palace. As she stopped to greet and take photos with her supporters, a man approached her from behind, touched her inappropriately, and attempted to kiss her on the neck.
A member of the presidential security team quickly intervened and pulled the man away. Reports indicated that the individual was intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Despite the inappropriate behavior, President Sheinbaum handled the situation with composure and maintained a polite demeanor, even agreeing to take a photo with the man before he was detained by security officials.

The head of Mexico’s Ministry for Women strongly condemned the incident, stating, “We strongly denounce what happened today with our President. Such actions are unacceptable against any woman.”
According to the United Nations agency for women (UN Women), nearly 70 percent of women in Mexico aged 15 and above have experienced some form of sexual harassment at least once in their lives.
The videos of the incident have gone viral on social media, sparking outrage and renewed calls for stricter measures to protect women, including those in the highest offices of government.
