The Tesla Gigafactory in Shanghai has gradually taken shape, and will produce its first model by the end of 2019. The U.S. electric carmaker Tesla broke ground on its Shanghai factory in January this year. The new plant takes up an area of 860,000 square meters. The first phase of the project, a Model 3 production line, will be put into operation by the end of this year, with a designed annual capacity of producing 150,000 electric cars. Right now, the construction of the main part of the factory has been completed, and the manufacturing equipment is being installed. The spectacular factory is divided into four workshops for stamping, welding, painting and final assembling. Although the factory is not put into use yet, the project group of the company is busying working. More than 300 employees from home and abroad work under the same roof. To support the construction of the factory, Tesla deployed engineers from all over the world to Shanghai. The new plant is Tesla’s first gigafactory outside the United States. With an investment of over 50 billion yuan (7 billion U.S. dollars), it is the largest foreign-invested manufacturing project in Shanghai’s history.—Reuters
