KARACHI – The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a heat alert for Sindh, warning that temperatures in several districts could soar to as high as 49 degrees Celsius over the next few days.
The Met Office’s Early Warning Centre said that a heatwave is expected to continue in the central and upper parts of Sindh until May 11, with severe weather conditions likely to affect daily life in several areas.
Officials said districts including Shaheed Benazirabad, Ghotki, Khairpur, Naushahro Feroze, Jacobabad, Larkana and Sukkur are likely to experience extremely hot and dry weather, with temperatures expected to range between 47°C and 49°C.
Meanwhile, Karachi is expected to remain hot and humid during the next three days. The maximum temperature in the city is likely to stay between 34°C and 36°C, while humidity levels may range from 55 to 65 per cent during afternoon hours.
The Met Office said sea breezes and westerly winds are expected to continue in Karachi, but the humidity could increase the intensity of the heat.
Authorities have advised citizens to avoid direct exposure to sunlight during daytime hours, drink plenty of water and take precautionary measures to prevent heatstroke and dehydration.
Special caution has been advised for children, women and elderly people, who are considered more vulnerable during extreme weather conditions.
