Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in New York on Thursday on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders discussed Pakistan-Iran relations and the evolving regional situation. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also attended the meeting.

The meeting comes as Pakistan continues diplomatic efforts aimed at facilitating dialogue between Iran and the United States. Shehbaz and Pezeshkian had previously met in Bishkek on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in August. During that meeting, they reaffirmed the longstanding ties between Pakistan and Iran and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation and regional connectivity.
The latest engagement takes place amid renewed diplomatic contacts between Washington and Tehran. Reports from New York suggest that Qatar has been facilitating direct shuttle diplomacy between the two sides, while Pakistan has been maintaining a parallel channel with Tehran.
Prime Minister Shehbaz is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly early Friday, Pakistan time.
