LAHORE – September is about to bring another shock for electricity consumers as upcoming bills will carry additional charge. With a fresh 52-paisa-per-unit increase approved under the quarterly adjustment mechanism consumers across Pakistan, including Karachi are set to feel the impact in their pockets.
The government approved 52-paisa-per-unit increase in electricity prices under the quarterly adjustment mechanism, with NEPRA issuing a formal notification. The move is expected to result in around Rs12.67 billion being recovered from consumers across Pakistan.
The additional amount will be reflected in electricity bills for September, October and November. Consumers will pay 52 paisas extra for every unit they use during these three months. While the increase is not being added permanently to the base tariff, it will still mean higher bills for households and businesses during the recovery period.
Consumers in Karachi will not be spared either. The adjustment will also apply to K-Electric consumers, meaning electricity users in the country’s biggest city will see the additional charge reflected in their bills.
For average household, a few paisas per unit may not sound like much at first. But when multiplied across millions of consumers and thousands of units, the amount quickly adds up. That is why the latest adjustment is expected to bring an additional Rs12.67 billion from electricity users nationwide.
The increase comes at a time when consumers are already dealing with expensive electricity bills, making even a temporary additional charge a noticeable burden for many families and businesses.
The surge comes under quarterly adjustment mechanism, through which changes in the power sector’s costs are reflected in consumer tariffs. These adjustments can take into account factors such as electricity purchase costs, generation expenses and other related financial costs.
NEPRA reviewed the relevant figures before approving the adjustment, while the federal government subsequently gave its approval. NEPRA then issued the notification for implementation.
The additional charge will start with September bills and continue until November.
