Pakistan has welcomed the United Kingdom-led sanctions on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, terming these settlements a serious obstacle to achieving a two-state solution.
The UK, together with Canada and France, announced the measures yesterday. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said the Israeli government had failed to act against “ethnic cleansing” in the West Bank.
Separately, the foreign ministers of 12 countries, including Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden, issued a joint statement indicating that they were considering similar steps. They said Israel’s policies and actions in the West Bank were damaging the prospects of establishing a viable two-state solution.
In a statement posted on X, Pakistan’s Foreign Office endorsed the measures, saying the continued construction and expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories violated international law and relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council.

The FO said the settlement policy was obstructing progress towards a two-state settlement and welcomed the position taken by the 12 countries considering comparable measures against Israeli settlements.
Pakistan expressed hope that the sanctions would convey a strong international rejection of unlawful Israeli actions in the occupied Palestinian territories. Pakistan also reaffirmed its support for the Palestinian people and said it would continue to back their legitimate right to self-determination.
