CHAKWAL – It started as routine traffic violation at 15 Chowk in Chakwal ended in tragedy when retired army officer suffered fatal heart attack after being fined for riding a motorcycle without a number plate.
The victim, identified as Havaldar (retd) Muhammad Khan, 45, of Dhok Gujar, had served in the Pakistan Army and was later employed as a security guard at Sui Gas. According to family members, Muhammad Khan had a valid driving license and helmet and had no prior medical conditions.
The incident occurred when Muhammad Khan and his young son were stopped by a traffic sergeant at 15 Chowk while returning from Talagang Jhatla. The officer issued a fine of Rs2,000 for the missing number plate. The father-son duo then went to a nearby kiosk to pay the fine when, suddenly, Muhammad Khan’s health deteriorated rapidly.
He was rushed to District Headquarters Hospital Chakwal, but despite emergency efforts, he could not be saved. The shocking death prompted the police to deploy a heavy contingent at the hospital amid fears of protests by the grieving family.
The case has reignited a heated debate over traffic law enforcement and the approach of authorities toward citizens, with questions being raised about the balance between strict enforcement and public safety.
According to police, the fine was issued due to violation of traffic regulations, while the Medical Superintendent of DHQ Chakwal confirmed that Muhammad Khan was already deceased upon arrival at the hospital.
The tragic event has left the city in shock and raised urgent calls for caution and sensitivity in enforcing traffic laws, especially against senior citizens and individuals with unknown health conditions.
