ISLAMABAD – The Power Division has started considering a proposal aimed at providing relief to non-protected domestic electricity consumers by reviewing the existing formula for protected consumers.
Under the proposed mechanism, if a household consumes more than 200 units of electricity in a particular month, the additional rate would be charged in that same month. Consumers would not have to pay the additional charges for the following five months under the proposed system.
Report said the proposal seeks to change the existing mechanism, under which a consumer can lose protected status after exceeding 200 units in a single month. Under the current formula, the consumer may then have to pay higher rates for several subsequent months, even if electricity consumption falls below the 200-unit threshold.
The proposed revision would link the additional charges to the month in which consumption exceeds 200 units, rather than continuing the higher rates for the following months.
Meanwhile, the issue of supplying electricity at lower rates for Bitcoin mining remains unresolved. Sources said the government has so far been unable to convince the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the matter.
The issue is expected to be raised again before the IMF team during the latest round of talks.
