Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has rejected claims that artificial intelligence could lead to the extinction of humanity within the next few years, calling such predictions irresponsible and unnecessary.
Speaking in an interview, the Nvidia co-founder and chief executive dismissed comments by former Anthropic researcher Jacob Kozan, who has warned that AI could potentially pose an existential threat to humanity within the next decade.
Huang said 2030 would not be the year the world ends, arguing that there was effectively no basis for predicting such an outcome. He said frightening people with claims about the imminent end of humanity was irresponsible.
Kozan had warned in a post on X that technology companies were engaged in a race to develop self-improving superintelligent systems, arguing that the rapid progress of AI could have profound consequences.
He said increasingly powerful AI systems could potentially hack systems, transform industries rapidly and gain control over resources and power. Kozan also warned that developers were creating AI systems with the belief that they could eventually possess the capability to cause mass human casualties by the end of the decade.
Concerns over the potential risks of AI have also drawn scrutiny from US lawmakers and technology executives.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has previously called for the pace of AI development to be slowed, warning that more advanced AI agents could potentially gain control of parts of the internet and cause major economic damage.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk have also previously expressed concerns about the risks associated with rapidly advancing AI technology.
US President Donald Trump has dismissed some warnings surrounding AI development, describing them as conspiracy theories and rumours.
Huang said predictions about AI causing human extinction had not been scientifically established. He also stressed that Nvidia’s business success depended on developing products and services safely.
According to Huang, the company’s value was directly linked to the safety and reliability of its technology, making responsible development an important business consideration.
