The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued an alert ahead of the ninth and final spell of monsoon rains.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across the province from September 12 to 17.
According to the forecast, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang and Attock are expected to receive rain throughout the period. Lahore, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Wazirabad, Hafizabad, Kasur, Okara, Nankana Sahib and Sargodha are likely to experience rainfall from September 14 to 17.
Rain is also possible in Khushab, Mianwali, Noorpur Thal, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Layyah, Bhakkar, Sahiwal, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan and adjoining areas.
PDMA Director General Muhammad Saif Anwer Jappa asked commissioners and deputy commissioners across Punjab to remain on high alert and ensure timely precautionary measures in view of the forecast.
He warned of possible urban flooding in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala and Faisalabad, as well as flash flooding in rainwater drains. Authorities were also directed to remain vigilant against landslides in Murree, Galyat and other hilly areas.
The PDMA has alerted departments including Health, Irrigation, Communication and Works, Local Government and Livestock to ensure preparedness and timely response.
Jappa urged citizens to avoid mud houses and dilapidated buildings, which pose a heightened risk of collapse during heavy rains. He advised people to stay indoors or in safe locations during windstorms, avoid unnecessary travel and remain away from open areas during thunderstorms to reduce the risk of lightning strikes.
Parents were also advised to keep children away from stagnant water in low-lying areas, power lines and utility poles.
