A deadly traffic accident near Chakri on M-2 Motorway in Rawalpindi left one person dead and 30 others injured as torrential monsoon rains continue to lash the twin cities and other parts of Punjab.
According to the Motorway Police spokesperson, multiple vehicles collided near Chakri, with the accident attributed to poor visibility and hazardous road conditions caused by heavy rainfall. The deceased was identified as Shams-ur-Rehman, a resident of Attock.
Rescue teams shifted all 30 injured people to various hospitals in Rawalpindi and Islamabad for treatment. Those who sustained minor injuries are being discharged after receiving medical assistance. The accident comes as Rawalpindi and Islamabad face one of the heaviest rain spells of the current monsoon season.
Amid intense downpour, WASA Rawalpindi has issued a high alert and declared a rain emergency across the city.
WASA Managing Director said more than 140 millimetres of rain has already been recorded, describing the ongoing spell as the heaviest of the current monsoon season. The situation has also intensified around Nullah Lai, where the water level at the Katarian point has climbed to 20 feet, raising concerns over possible flooding and urban inundation.
With heavy rain continuing, authorities have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly on highways and roads where reduced visibility and slippery conditions can dramatically increase the risk of accidents.
