ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan on Wednesday a letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly, seeking complete details of the disqualification reference filed against him and the basis of the Speaker’s decision to forward it to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
In the letter, Omar Ayub demanded that the Speaker provide the legal and constitutional grounds of the reference, a certified copy of the reference, and the record of the proceedings.
He also sought an explanation of the allegations, the constitutional points raised, and a legal justification of the reference under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution.
The opposition leader asked for certified copies of all evidence attached to the reference, as well as internal notings and file records related to the decision.
Omar Ayub further requested a detailed account of whether he was served any notice or given a chance to present his explanation. He also questioned the basis of the reference being entertained if it was filed by third parties.
He urged the Speaker to provide precedents relating to the exercise of discretion under Article 63(2), emphasizing the need for transparency, legal due process, and fair proceedings. He stressed that the record must be shared promptly in the interest of parliamentary dignity and democratic accountability.
It may be recalled that the reference against Omar Ayub was filed by Babar Nawaz, and the National Assembly Speaker subsequently forwarded it to the ECP for further action.
