ISLAMABAD – Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) approved regulatory relaxations for Non-Banking Microfinance Companies (NBMFCs), enabling them to participate in the Government of Punjab’s flagship housing scheme, Apni Chhat Apna Ghar.
Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz’s flagship initiative Apni Chhat Apna Ghar initiative is designed to provide affordable housing solutions to low-income families across Punjab. By allowing Non-Banking Microfinance Companies to play direct role in the scheme, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan is opening new avenues for underserved communities to access home financing — a sector traditionally neglected by mainstream financial institutions.
These microfinance firms are key players in financial services ecosystem, particularly known for offering microloans and livelihood support to marginalized communities. With new development, these institutions can now expand their services to include housing finance, tailored to meet the needs of Pakistan’s most vulnerable populations.
“This regulatory easing reflects SECP’s commitment to inclusive economic growth, Commission said empowering NBMFCs to extend their reach into affordable housing, supporting efforts to uplift underserved communities and stimulate socio-economic development.
Stakeholders in microfinance and housing sectors welcomed the move, noting it will bridge critical financing gaps and bring meaningful change to thousands of low-income households dreaming of home ownership.
