LAHORE – A man allegedly opened fire at his in-laws’ residence in the Barkat Colony area of Chuhng, Lahore, killing his wife and three members of her family before shooting himself, police said on Tuesday.
The police said that the incident occurred following a dispute related to the couple’s love marriage.
The suspect, identified as Imran Shaukat, had allegedly been facing a case registered by his wife’s family in connection with the dispute.
Police said the suspect had recently been released on bail. After his release, he allegedly went to his in-laws’ house in Barkat Colony and opened fire on the family.
As a result of the shooting, Imran allegedly killed his wife, Sumayya Bibi, his mother-in-law Shamaila, his father-in-law Ali, and his brother-in-law Zeeshan.
However, rescue officials did not mention Shumaila, the mother-in-law, in their latest report.
After the attack, the suspect allegedly turned the weapon on himself and sustained a gunshot wound. Police said he was found at the scene after the shooting.
The incident sent shockwaves through the residential area, while police teams immediately reached the scene after receiving information about the firing.
Investigators have begun collecting evidence from the crime scene, including spent bullet casings and other material that could help establish the sequence of events.
Police said the motive appeared to be linked to the dispute surrounding the couple’s marriage, while further investigation is under way to determine the exact circumstances leading to the shooting.
The police said they are also examining the previously registered case against the suspect and the circumstances surrounding his release on bail.
The bodies of the victims will be shifted for medico-legal formalities as part of the investigation.
Police said further details would be shared after the initial investigation and collection of forensic evidence are completed.
