LONDON- Pakistani actor Mahira Khan has stressed the importance of openly discussing mental health issues, saying that society still tends to avoid conversations on the subject despite its serious impact on people’s lives.
Speaking to the media during an event organised by the British Asian Trust in London, Mahira Khan said awareness around mental health needs to be strengthened urgently. She noted that many individuals still feel embarrassed or hesitant to talk about psychological struggles, which often prevents them from seeking timely help and treatment.
Mahira Khan emphasised that mental health conditions should be treated with the same seriousness as physical illnesses. She said that greater awareness and acceptance would encourage people to speak more confidently about their challenges and access appropriate support without stigma.
The actor also appreciated ongoing efforts in the United Kingdom to promote mental health and social welfare, highlighting the role of British Asian Trust in supporting such initiatives. She further praised the patronage of King Charles III, saying his involvement in welfare and social causes helps draw attention to important public issues.
During her interaction, she also addressed broader social concerns, stating that incidents of harassment and violence are unacceptable in any form. She added that legal measures alone are not enough to address such problems and that a shift in societal attitudes is equally essential.
She stressed that holding perpetrators accountable and making examples of them is necessary to discourage such behaviour in society.
Mahira Khan added that a healthy and safe society can only be built when issues such as mental health, respect for individuals, and social responsibility are openly discussed and taken seriously at all levels.
