LAHORE – Smog is likely to prevail in Lahore and parts of Punjab on Tuesday night, Wednesday and Thursday, though with less intensity due to change in wind direction.

Toxic smog choked Lahore and other parts of Punjab that caused the government to take measures like closure of schools, parks and restrictions on businesses for saving citizens from health hazards. However, the situation started improving with the change in wind direction two days back.

On reduction in smog intensity, Punjab eased restrictions on businesses and opened schools. Despite visible improvement in air quality, Lahore is still amongst most polluted cities in the world with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 203 (very unhealthy).

As per the data collected from IQAir website at 8:41 pm, Lahore is only behind India’s Delhi (AQI 500) and Mongolia’s Ulaanbaatar (AQI 241).

As per the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), continental air prevails over most parts of Pakistan.

Under these conditions, dry weather will likely prevail in Lahore and most districts of Punjab on Tuesday night, Wednesday and Thursday. Smog/fog will likely prevail in Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Mangla, Jhelum, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Okara, Hafizabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Multan, Khanewal, Rahim Yar Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan and surroundings.

Lahore’s minimum temperature will likely remain between 10-12°C on Wednesday and Thursday.

Meanwhile, smog/fog prevailed in most areas of Punjab during the last 24 hours.
