AS International Labour Day was observed on Wednesday (I May), it is imperative to reflect on the state of workers’ rights. This year’s theme, “Ensuring Workplace Safety and Health amidst Climate Change,” resonates deeply as we witness the intersection of environmental concerns with labour rights.

In our country, the observance of Labour Day coincides with a stark reality: many workers are struggling to make ends meet in the face of inflation. Despite the establishment of a minimum wage of thirty-two thousand rupees, its implementation remains elusive in both government departments and the private sector. This paltry wage, further diminished by inflation, fails to adequately meet the needs of the working class. It is incumbent upon the government to take decisive action to enhance the wages of salaried workers, ensuring that they commensurate with the rising cost of living. The rise should be uniform with no discrimination such as the executive allowance. Moreover, directives must be issued to the private sector to uphold these revised wage standards. The plight of workers extends beyond mere financial concerns. Workplace safety, a fundamental right enshrined in both Pakistan’s constitution and international laws, is alarmingly neglected. Tragic incidents such as the frequent fires that ravage industrial areas like Karachi serve as stark reminders of this negligence, claiming the lives of countless workers, often from marginalized communities. To address this pressing issue, comprehensive measures must be implemented. Firstly, rigorous enforcement of safety regulations and regular inspections of workplaces are imperative to mitigate hazards and prevent accidents. Additionally, investing in robust infrastructure, such as fire safety equipment and emergency response systems can bolster preparedness and minimize the risk of casualties in the event of an incident. By prioritizing the creation of safe and healthy workplaces, we not only safeguard lives but also enhance productivity, bolster business reputation, and fulfil our moral and legal obligations to protect workers’ rights.
