ISLAMABAD – Justice Aminuddin Khan was sworn in as the first chief justice of the newly established Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) on Friday.
President Asif Ali Zardari administered oath to the Justice Khan during a ceremony at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.
The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir, the heads of the Pakistan Air Force and Navy, and several other senior officials.
Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, Chairman Senate Yousuf Raza Gillani, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and cabinet minister also attended the event.
The event will be followed by Justice Aminuddin Khan administering the oath to the newly appointed judges of the Federal Constitutional Court.
A day earlier, Justice Aminuddin was named as first-ever Chief Justice of Federal Constitutional Court. President of Pakistan approved the historic appointment on the advice of the Prime Minister, days before Justice Khan’s scheduled retirement, making this elevation a dramatic and unprecedented moment in the nation’s judicial history.
Khan served as the head of the Constitutional Bench, cementing his authority and expertise in some of the country’s most sensitive and high-profile legal matters.
This appointment comes after 27th Constitutional Amendment, recently approved by Parliament and signed into law by the President. The amendment redefines process for selecting the Chief Justice, stipulating that the position shall now be held by the most senior among the Chief Justices of the Supreme Court or the Federal Constitutional Court.
Who is Justice Aminuddin Khan?
Khn hailed form Multan, who received his early education from Multa. He completed LLB from University Law College, Multan in 1984, and a diploma in tax law.
Justice Khan’s judicial journey has been marked by excellence. He joined the Supreme Court of Pakistan in October 2019 after a notable tenure at the Lahore High Court from 2011 to 2019, where he earned a reputation for his expertise in civil law, particularly in property, inheritance, and pre-emption cases.
He started his legal career under guidance of his father, later gaining admission as an advocate of the Supreme Court in 2001. Beyond his judicial work, Justice Amin has been a committed educator, serving as a lecturer and examiner at University Law College, Multan, and contributing to the governance of several universities, including UET Lahore.
Throughout his career, Justice Khan presided over high-stakes cases, including appeals concerning civilian trials in military courts, and was appointed to lead the Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court in 2024.
