Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi, Monem Zafar Khan, has announced that on January 31, protests will be held at 13 locations across Karachi as part of a nationwide campaign against the government and the Independent Power Producers (IPP) mafia. He stated that the public should receive the Rs 1,100 billion savings from revised IPP contracts and called for an immediate reduction in electricity prices. During a press conference at Idara Noor-e-Haq, Monem Zafar Khan strongly criticized K-Electric, demanding an end to load shedding, overbilling, and unjust taxes.
He claimed that Jamaat-e-Islami is the only party actively opposing K-Electric’s anti-consumer policies. He accused K-Electric, NEPRA, and the government of forming a “satanic alliance” to exploit the public. Despite privatization, K-E is still operating outdated power plants from 40 years ago, instead of increasing power generation. Expressing concern over the surge in armed robberies and street crimes in Karachi, Monem Zafar Khan said that law enforcement agencies and the Sindh government have remained silent spectators. He further revealed that over 2,000 dog bite cases were reported in January alone, yet the provincial government failed to take any preventive measures.
Monem also criticized the Sindh government for attempting to strip universities of their autonomy and hand them over to bureaucrats. He highlighted that for the past ten days, university classes have been boycotted, but the government has shown no concern. He accused the provincial administration of trying to appoint bureaucrats as vice-chancellors and hiring teachers on temporary contracts, pushing educational institutions further into crisis. Monem Zafar Khan slammed the ruling elite for failing to control their lavish expenditures while the middle class is sinking into poverty. He pointed out that the government is increasing its salaries by 140% while planning to purchase Rs 2 billion worth of vehicles for assistant commissioners. He accused the PPP, PML-N, MQM, and PTI of being united in this extravagance while the people suffer from inflation and economic hardships.
The press conference was also attended by Deputy Parliamentary Leader KMC Qazi Sadruddin, Jinnah Town Chairman Rizwan Abdul Sami, Vice Chairman Model Town Faisal Basit, Public Aid Committee Vice President Imran Shahid, and other party leaders. Monem Zafar Khan reaffirmed that Jamaat-e-Islami will not abandon Karachi’s people and will continue its struggle until their issues are resolved.
