Pakistan’s Insurers Pay Rs548bn in Life, Non-Life Claims in 2025

Insurance companies in Pakistan settled more than one million claims covering motor, accident and health, and fire and property insurance during 2025, according to data released by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) for the first time.

The figures are part of the SECP’s Insurance Industry Statistics Report 2025, which showed that life insurers paid gross claims worth Rs410 billion during the year, while non-life insurers settled claims of around Rs138 billion.

Life insurance claim payments increased from Rs380 billion in 2024, with death claims rising to nearly Rs37 billion from Rs33 billion. Non-life claim payments also climbed significantly, from Rs92 billion to approximately Rs138 billion.

The newly published data showed that life insurers settled more than 33,000 death claims in 2025. Non-life insurers, meanwhile, paid over 720,000 accident and health claims, more than 282,000 motor claims and nearly 11,000 fire and property claims.

SECP Chairman Dr Kabir Sidhu said claims settlement was an important indicator of insurers’ performance. He said making claim amounts and volumes public would improve accountability, strengthen policyholders’ confidence and contribute to sustainable industry growth.

Sidhu added that the SECP was conducting a detailed review of insurers’ claims management systems, including an assessment of claims-related data. The regulator has also invited public feedback on the draft Market Conduct Rules for Insurers, 2026.

The report highlighted overall expansion in the insurance sector, with total industry assets rising more than 9% to Rs4.1 trillion. Gross written premiums increased 15% to Rs778 billion, with life insurance premiums growing 14% and non-life premiums 16%.

Private life insurers recorded a 49% increase in health insurance premiums to Rs30.4 billion, while term life premiums rose nearly 37% to over Rs19.7 billion.

In the non-life segment, motor insurance premiums grew about 35% to more than Rs78.5 billion, while accident and health premiums increased around 42% to over Rs35.7 billion.

Premiums collected through digital distribution channels also registered strong growth, rising 71% to approximately Rs6.8 billion. Takaful represented 16% of the life insurance market and 15% of the non-life insurance market.
