Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Chief, Monem Zafar Khan, has urged the cancellation of K-Electric’s generation license, demanding that Karachi’s electricity needs be fully met through the National Grid to ensure affordable and uninterrupted power for the city’s residents, traders, and industrialists. Monem Zafar Khan highlighted that the recent reduction of Rs 4.89 per unit in November 2024 electricity rates was primarily due to the supply of 1,600 megawatts of cheaper power from the National Grid.
He stressed that canceling K-Electric’s license and transitioning Karachi’s power supply to the National Grid would relieve the national treasury from heavy subsidies while resolving the city’s energy woes. Jamaat-e-Islami representative Imran Shahid attended a NEPRA hearing and accused K-Electric of overbilling, issuing fraudulent bills, and engaging in illegal load-shedding practices that harm Karachi’s citizens.
He demanded that NEPRA take strict action against K-Electric for its blatant violations of regulations and investigate the company’s billing practices. Imran Shahid revealed that K-Electric issued fake bills worth Rs 68 billion, even to consumers who have not paid for decades. He pointed out that NEPRA laws mandate disconnection of electricity after three months of non-payment, yet K-Electric continues to provide power to defaulting customers, ignoring the law.
Jamaat-e-Islami demanded that NEPRA address the additional financial burden placed on consumers and impose severe penalties on K-Electric. The party also proposed that Karachi’s electricity needs be completely met through the National Grid to resolve the long-standing issues of the city’s residents and businesses.
