India’s outlandish claim

INDIAN government continues its efforts to mislead the world and its own people on disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir in order to divert attention from the atrocities it is committing against innocent and armless oppressed Kashmiri people. In its fresh act of delusion, it has asked the United Nations to remove Kashmir from the agenda of UN Security Council permanently for being an outdated agenda item.
The very claim of India is outlandish as agenda item could only be closed if a dispute is settled or there is a consensus decision of the Security Council on it. Commenting on the Indian move, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Munir Akram very rightly reminded that Kashmir could not be removed from agenda of the UN Security Council. He said the Indian representatives are either deluding themselves or deluding their public by making such assertions. The item was first inscribed on the agenda of the Security Council in its formal meeting on Jan 20, 1948 and since then the council has adopted 16 resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir. The UNSC does not recognise the Indian claim and not only treats Jammu and Kashmir as an unresolved dispute but also maintains military observers on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC). Every year, the council puts occupied Kashmir on its agenda as “the India-Pakistan Question”, making it clear that it sees it as a territory disputed between the two countries.
Also since August 05 last year, when India illegally merged the disputed territory, the Security Council has held three discussions on it. While we have no doubt in saying that all such Indian attempts are bound to fail, Pakistan must continue its efforts to forcefully raise the dispute at the world body. The 75th session of the UN General Assembly is all set to begin in New York later this month. We must ensure physical attendance of the session. Prime Minister Imran Khan delivered a historic address last year, which in fact helped, internationalised the lingering dispute. The Prime Minister who calls himself ambassador of Kashmiri people should once again take the podium at the UN General Assembly to shake the world conscience and expose the immoral Indian face.
