GILGTI – A helicopter of Gilgit-Baltistan government with five people on board crashed near Chilas area on Monday.
The incident was confirmed by the GB government spokesperson, saying two pilot and three technical staff members were in the helicopter when it met the accident.
He said it crashed due to technical fault, adding that rescue operation has been launched.
Meanwhile, a team of experts from the Russian manufacturer of the Mi-17 helicopter is expected to arrive in Pakistan to assist in the ongoing investigation into the recent crash of a Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government helicopter.
The incident occurred on August 15 during a relief operation in Mohmand district, where a Mi-17 helicopter belonging to the provincial government crashed, resulting in the martyrdom of five personnel, including two pilots.
According to official sources, the Russian experts will collaborate with Pakistani investigators to determine the technical causes of the crash. The team is expected to inspect the black box, as well as various parts of the wrecked aircraft, including both engines and the gearbox.
Sources further revealed that a significant portion of the wreckage, weighing several hundred kilograms, still remains at the crash site. Due to the heavy components, the KP government has formally requested a special transport helicopter from federal authorities to move the debris for detailed analysis.
The ill-fated helicopter had undergone overhauling in 2019, according to officials familiar with the aircraft’s maintenance history.
