A Lahore court on Wednesday granted police a three-day physical remand of Muskan, a woman accused in connection with the alleged rape of an Azerbaijani national.
The Azeri woman, who had reportedly come to Pakistan for business, was allegedly gang-raped by three men at a rented apartment in Lahore’s Defence area between Friday and Saturday night. Police subsequently registered a case at Defence C police station.
Judicial Magistrate Azhar Mahmood heard the case at the Cantonment Courts after Muskan was produced before him.
The prosecution said it was Muskan’s first physical remand and requested that she be handed over to police custody for investigation.
Opposing the request, Muskan’s lawyer maintained that her association with the Azerbaijani woman was only based on friendship. The defence also argued that physical remand was not warranted, claiming there was nothing to recover from the suspect.
During the proceedings, the magistrate asked Muskan whether she wished to undergo a medical examination. She responded in the affirmative.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court approved the three-day physical remand and sent Muskan into police custody.
The development came a day after another Lahore court granted police six-day physical remand of two suspects arrested in connection with the same alleged gang rape case.
Meanwhile, Additional Sessions Judge Riffaqat Ali on Tuesday restrained police from arresting another female suspect until October 5 while hearing her interim bail petition. The court also directed her to join the investigation and ordered police to submit a report on the case.
