Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met Qatari mediators in Doha and was briefed on US feedback regarding a proposed seven-day confidence-building plan, media reports said.
Araghchi is expected to take the US response back to Tehran for discussions on Wednesday.
According to an official, the key sticking point is the sequence in which the proposed measures would be implemented.
The initiative is intended to rebuild confidence between Iran and the United States and pave the way for a strengthened version of the memorandum of understanding reached by the two sides in June.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that US warships had moved at least 500 kilometres away from the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf.
IRGC spokesman Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi said around 30 to 40 US warships had been deployed in the Persian Gulf before the conflict but claimed that no American vessel was currently operating in the waterway or around the US Fifth Fleet’s base in Bahrain.
Mohebbi accused Washington of attempting to portray what Tehran described as a military setback as a success. He also said the US military lacked the capabilities and organisational structure required to maintain a prolonged conflict.
His comments came as Tehran continued to dispute US claims that American forces had regained control over commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Mohebbi had previously said US naval vessels had moved hundreds of kilometres away from Iranian waters, while asserting that Iran retained the capability to conduct long-range strikes.
