BAHAWALPUR – An elderly couple jumped into a canal in Bahawalpur after becoming distressed over alleged disputes with their children concerning the division of family property, a local private TV reported on Thursday.
The rescue officials said that the emergency teams launched a search operation after receiving information that the couple had jumped into the canal.
The rescuers managed to save the woman, while the search for her husband continued.
The body of the 75-year-old man was recovered from the Shashmahi Canal a day after the incident, according to rescue sources.
Initial information suggested that the elderly couple had taken the extreme step after allegedly becoming frustrated with repeated arguments among their children over the distribution of property.
The incident has raised concerns about the impact of prolonged family disputes on elderly parents, particularly where disagreements over property and inheritance create tensions within families.
Police have also recorded statements from the couple’s sons as part of the inquiry into the incident. The sons reportedly told police that their parents had not been mentally well.
The authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and are expected to determine what led the couple to enter the canal.
The woman was rescued and shifted to a medical facility for treatment, while the body of the elderly man was recovered after an extensive search operation.
Police and rescue authorities are continuing to gather statements and other information to establish the circumstances that preceded the incident.
The case has also brought attention to the importance of resolving family and property disputes without exposing elderly family members to prolonged emotional distress or conflict.
