China’s aerospace company, Lingkong Tianxing, has introduced a new hypersonic glide missile, the YKJ-1000, which is making waves in the defense sector across the world due to its impressive specifications and remarkably low cost.
The missile, with a range of 1,300 kilometers, can travel at speeds seven times faster than the speed of sound.
The YKJ-1000 is being referred to as a ‘cement-coated missile’ because of its outer thermal-resistant layer, made using common construction materials like foam concrete. Chinese media reports suggest that after successful military tests, the missile is now being produced in large quantities, with a unit price as low as $99,000.
In comparison, the US SM-6 naval interceptor missile, designed to counter such threats, costs approximately $4.1 million per unit, making it 40 times more expensive than the YKJ-1000. Similarly, the cost of a single interceptor in the U.S. THAAD missile defense system ranges from $12 million to $15 million.
Military experts are highlighting the potential impact of this cost difference on future warfare strategies. Some analysts believe that, if introduced into the international defense market, the YKJ-1000 could gain significant demand, particularly among countries that have yet to develop their own hypersonic missiles.
However, some critics have raised doubts regarding the missile’s low production cost, questioning how critical components like fuel and rocket engines can be manufactured at such a price.
The Chinese company has stated that they will soon provide a detailed explanation to address these concerns.
