ISLAMABAD – Pakistan is formally establishing the headquarters of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), DG ISPR confirmed in key presser amid major changes in military structure.
During a recent presser, a journalist questioned delay in notification, asking that “first there was a delay, then denial, and then clarification, which fueled widespread speculation. Why did this happen? Is it true that the government had put conditions to the notification? After all, the Field Marshal holds a lifetime honorary position.”
Responding to queries, ISPR chief clarified that CDF headquarters is now being formed. “Previously, there was only a committee and a staff mechanism,” he said. “We are now transitioning from committee coordination to a fully operational headquarters. Several requirements must be met, including reviewing the rules and regulations.”
He said, Pakistani Army does not operate on social media. We are a professional army. We want to ensure everything is done correctly from the start.
The journalist also raised questions about the appointment of the National Strategic Command commander and whether the position could be filled by a member from another force. DG ISPR responded firmly: “Read the Constitution; you know what it says. This decision is to be made by the Constitution and Parliament. By asking such questions, you are deliberately trying to create a narrative.”
He concluded, “When the time comes, the appointment will be made.”
With the official formation of the CDF headquarters, Pakistan takes a decisive step toward a more streamlined military command structure.
Asim Munir as first Chief of Defence Forces
Field Marshal Asim Munir has been appointed as Pakistan’s first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), while continuing as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) for a five-year term, following approvals from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari.
Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu also received a two-year extension. The Ministry of Defence is expected to issue formal notifications soon.
The appointment follows constitutional and military law reforms, including the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which abolished the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and defined new powers for the Commander of the National Strategic Command.
