AT the very outset, I would like to express my sincere appreciation for UNESCO’s consideration of specific sites in Lahore for inclusion in the World Heritage Sites list. The Committee’s dedication to the preservation of cultural heritage worldwide is genuinely inspiring and greatly valued. It is this commitment to preserving our shared histories that motivates me to advocate for the inclusion of the entire Old Lahore in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Although the acknowledgment of specific sites in Lahore is commendable, Old Lahore as a whole is a tapestry of cultural, historical and architectural significance that requires comprehensive protection. Old Lahore, also known as the Walled City of Lahore, is a living museum that encapsulates centuries of history. The rich cultural mosaic of the Mughal, Sikh and British colonial eras is reflected in the area’s narrow alleys, bustling bazaars and magnificent structures, including the Lahore Fort and the Badshahi Mosque as well as innumerable other lesser-known but equally significant buildings.Lahore is not just a treasure trove of historical monuments and architectural marvels; the city, especially Old Lahore, has witnessed the artistic and engineering prowess of many past civilizations. The Mughal, Sikh and British eras have all left indelible marks on the cityscape, resulting in a unique blend of architectural styles that reflect the cultural evolution of the region. The intricate woodwork, frescoes and mosaic tiles found in the Havelis (mansions) and mosques of Old Lahore are unparalleled in their beauty and craftsmanship.

Currently, only the Fort and Shalimar Gardens have been incorporated as World Heritage Sites. While this has contributed to preserving their legacy, allowing future generations to appreciate the charm of the citadel and the rejuvenating impact of the gardens, Old Lahore is a place bustling with centuries of history and tradition, deserving of your protection. Rising urbanization and a lack of resources hinder its preservation and development. The inclusion of Old Lahore on the UNESCO World Heritage List would grant international recognition and access to essential resources and expertise for its preservation and sustainable development. This is crucial due to Old Lahore’s historical significance as a political and cultural hub, offering invaluable insights into the region’s development. Furthermore, its residents uphold traditional crafts and practices, which would be preserved through comprehensive protection. Such preservation will provide educational opportunities for academicians, students, and visitors, enabling them to study urban life’s evolution over centuries. Additionally, safeguarding Old Lahore can enhance cultural tourism, attract global visitors, boost the local economy, and promote heritage conservation.Lastly, focusing on individual sites without considering the broader urban context risks neglecting the surrounding areas integral to Old Lahore’s historical and cultural fabric. A comprehensive approach will maintain the area’s urban integrity and prevent modern encroachments from undermining its historical value. The recognition of the entire Old Lahore as a World Heritage Site will necessitate coordination of resources and endeavors. At the same time, the long-term benefits of preserving this unique cultural heritage for future generations are invaluable. With UNESCO’s assistance, we can establish a sustainable conservation strategy that includes the needs of the local community and the heritage sites.

Therefore, I strongly urge UNESCO to consider this request and take the necessary measures to include the entirety of Old Lahore in its World Heritage Sites list, ensuring the preservation of this irreplaceable cultural treasure for the benefit of all humanity. I am grateful for your time and consideration and am optimistic that the UNESCO World Heritage Committee will recognize the importance of safeguarding Old Lahore in its entirety.
