Why could Dec 2026–Feb 2027 be difficult period for electricity consumers in Pakistan?

September Electricity Bills To Bring Another Shock As Rs2 52 Per Unit Hike Looms

KARACHI – Electricity consumers in Pakistan may face a fresh financial burden this winter as fuel price adjustments are expected to rise by two to three times.

Reports said rising fuel costs and seasonal challenges are expected to push up electricity generation expenses.

They said FPA could rise by two to three times during December 2026, January 2027 and February 2027, increasing the financial burden on consumers.

Why Power FPA Could Surge?

The anticipated increase is primarily linked to higher international prices of liquefied natural gas (LNG), coal and other fuels used in electricity production.

Reports said power generation could face additional difficulties during winter due to limited availability of locally produced gas.

Domestic gas supplies are often prioritised for household consumption during colder months, leaving power plants with fewer local fuel options.

Reduced hydropower production during winter is another factor expected to increase reliance on costly alternative fuels.

Officials noted that elevated fuel prices in the international market could further drive up fuel price adjustments, ultimately affecting electricity bills.

Authorities had previously attempted to contain the impact of rising generation costs through measures such as two-hour load management and other cost-control efforts.

However, the recent increase in global fuel prices, particularly LNG, has made it more difficult to keep electricity generation expenses under control.
