Authorities are considering making medical examinations of drivers compulsory alongside vehicle fitness tests to improve road safety and reduce traffic accidents.
Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi has written to the relevant authorities, requesting dedicated medical screening counters at Services Hospital and Mian Munshi Hospital.
The proposed facilities would assess drivers’ eyesight, colour vision, night vision and psychological fitness. Shirazi stressed that medical conditions, including poor eyesight and difficulty seeing at night, could increase the risk of road accidents.
He has also called for mobile medical teams to be deployed at bus stands and transport terminals to examine drivers’ health.
According to the CTO, the proposed measures would help identify medically unfit drivers, prevent accidents and save lives.
