Acting President Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani urges sustained efforts to eradicate polio in Pakistan

Senate Chairman Highlights Role Of Business Community In Economic Social Development

ISLAMABAD – Acting President Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has called for sustained nationwide efforts to eradicate polio, stressing the need to ensure that every child receives vaccination and no one is left vulnerable to the virus.

In his message on World Polio Day, observed on October 24, Acting President Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said Pakistan had made progress in reducing polio cases, but the continued circulation of the virus required consistent vaccination campaigns, effective routine immunisation and greater attention to areas where children remained difficult to reach.

He emphasised that missing a vaccination dose could leave children at risk of a lifelong disability, affecting their mobility, education and independence. He called for reliable vaccination services and timely follow-ups to ensure that children who missed doses were reached.

Gilani also highlighted the importance of public trust in polio eradication efforts, saying parents should have access to clear and reliable information from health professionals. He stressed that community representatives, religious scholars and local leaders could play a significant role in addressing concerns and encouraging families to cooperate with vaccination teams.

The acting president underscored the contribution of frontline health workers, who administer vaccines in communities across the country. He said they must be provided with the necessary resources, support and security to carry out their duties safely and effectively.

He added that vaccination campaigns should also help connect families with routine immunisation programmes and other essential healthcare services.

Gilani urged the relevant authorities to maintain close oversight of vaccination activities, ensure follow-ups for children who missed doses and sustain the gains achieved during each campaign.

He stressed that eliminating polio required coordinated and continuous action at every level, from national planning to community-based efforts, to protect every child from the preventable disease.
