Iran has reportedly developed plans to target undersea communications cables in the Gulf if the United States and Israel launch another attack, international media reported citing two senior Iranian officials.
The reported plans come amid growing warnings from Iranian officials that critical digital infrastructure across the region could be drawn into a renewed confrontation if diplomatic efforts between Tehran and Washington fail.
The two officials provided limited information about the potential operations, including no specific locations or methods. However, one indicated that Iran could seek to delay repairs following any damage, potentially extending disruptions to internet connectivity and other communications services.
One official warned that a new attack on Iran could remove previous limits on its potential targets, including undersea cables and military installations, both declared and covert.
Mohsen Rezaei, a senior Iranian security figure, has also warned that digital infrastructure associated with the United States in Gulf countries could face attacks. Potential targets mentioned in these warnings include data centres and facilities supporting artificial intelligence.
The concerns follow reported Iranian strikes in March that hit two Amazon Web Services facilities in the United Arab Emirates and damaged infrastructure near another AWS facility in Bahrain. During the same period, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps identified major American technology companies, including Microsoft, Google, Apple and Nvidia, as potential legitimate targets.
Trump Signals Possible Further Action Against Iran
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington could consider another military operation against Iran while also suggesting that the conflict could be brought to an end relatively quickly.
Speaking at a rally in Florida, Trump pointed to Iran’s economic difficulties, rising prices and financial pressures as factors affecting the country. He framed the decision facing Washington as a choice between ending the war and allowing Iran to weaken further.
Trump also said Cuba would be addressed after the Iran issue and indicated that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would be sent to help finalise a deal.
