Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Secretary General Nayyar Bukhari on Wednesday said his party would provide constitutional recommendations if the federal government consulted it over the possible imposition of governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
Bukhari said governor’s rule could be imposed on the governor’s recommendation if the provincial government failed to perform its duties.
His remarks came amid repeated warnings from ministers in the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led federal government about imposing governor’s rule in KP, citing the deteriorating security situation and alleged “illegal” actions by the PTI-backed provincial administration.
PTI has announced a long march towards Islamabad for October 4 after postponing its planned September 27 protest.
Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar had earlier said the Constitution clearly provided for the imposition of an emergency if circumstances in KP warranted such action.
KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi also warned the provincial government against creating circumstances that could lead to governor’s rule. He said any order issued by President Asif Ali Zardari would be implemented.
Bukhari described KP’s law and order situation as extremely serious, claiming that residents, including those in the chief minister’s home district, were confined to their homes after evening.
He also criticised PTI leaders for allegedly not attending funerals of victims of terrorist attacks and accused the party of focusing on the release of its jailed founder, Imran Khan, rather than public issues.
The PPP leader stressed that political disputes should be resolved through dialogue and said peaceful protest was a citizen’s right, but attacks on the state were unacceptable.
He also said Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari had been invited to an All Parties Conference convened by TTAP, with the PPP’s central executive committee to decide whether to attend.
