Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Amir Muqam on Monday said all legal requirements for imposing governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had been fulfilled, citing what he called “illegal” actions by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.
Speaking to reporters in Peshawar, Muqam said “anything can happen at any time”, accusing the PTI-led provincial government of failing to improve education, healthcare, basic services and law and order despite governing the province for years.
He said peace was essential for development and questioned the security situation surrounding PTI rallies, asking why the party’s gatherings had not faced the same terrorist threats as those involving his side.
KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi said the provincial government should avoid creating circumstances that could lead to governor’s rule. He added that any order issued by President Asif Ali Zardari would be implemented.
Afridi, in response, said he would not back down to threats of governor’s rule or emergency. He called for consultation with the provincial government, administration and police before adopting a new security policy, claiming his proposed measures could restore peace within 100 days.
The CM said strengthening police capabilities alone would not resolve the security crisis and urged the federal government to change its policy. He also said his government would oppose any action taken against the mandate of the people of KP.
