ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman has revealed that theft incidents have been reported at around 9,000 telecom sites across the country, describing the issue as a major challenge affecting service delivery.
Speaking at a meeting, the PTA chief said the government expects telecom operators to compensate consumers if services remain unavailable after they have subscribed to a package.
The chairman’s remarks came amid discussions on the quality of telecom services and consumer protection, with the regulator reiterating its commitment to improving service standards while addressing challenges facing the telecommunications sector.
“If a customer purchases a package but is unable to use it due to service disruptions, we are asked to ensure that the amount is refunded,” the chairman said.
He said that widespread theft and vandalism at telecom infrastructure have significantly affected network operations in various parts of the country.
The PTA chairman further disclosed that the regulator has imposed Rs4 billion in fines on telecom operators over poor service quality in an effort to improve standards.
Clarifying the authority’s role, he said the PTA has no jurisdiction over taxes imposed on mobile services, adding that the responsibility for levying such taxes rests with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
