The rise comes as ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, continues to expand rapidly through artificial intelligence and digital innovation.
According to recent reports, the value of ByteDance surged after strong growth in its AI business, adding nearly $24.1 billion to Zhang Yiming’s fortune in a single day. His estimated net worth has now climbed to $92.8 billion.
The achievement marks a remarkable journey for someone who once worked as a regular software engineer with little public attention around him.
While Zhang’s wealth has grown rapidly this year, Mukesh Ambani has faced financial setbacks, reportedly losing over $20 billion from his net worth. Even so, Ambani remains one of the most influential business leaders in Asia. Meanwhile, Gautam Adani continues to hold the title of Asia’s richest person.
Many experts believe the biggest reason behind Zhang’s success is ByteDance’s AI assistant “Doubao,” which has become increasingly popular among users in China and other countries. Reports suggest the platform now has more than 300 million users.
Despite becoming one of the world’s wealthiest people, Zhang Yiming is known for avoiding the spotlight. Unlike many billionaires, he rarely appears in public and prefers to keep his personal life private.
Born in China’s Fujian province in 1983, Zhang grew up in a modest household where both parents worked government jobs. Friends and colleagues often describe him as naturally curious, intelligent, and deeply focused on solving problems.
He graduated in software engineering from Nankai University in 2005, where he also met his future wife.
After university, Zhang joined a travel-tech company called Kuxun as an engineer. His dedication and willingness to take on responsibilities quickly helped him stand out. Within a short period, he was managing teams and becoming involved in product planning and business decisions.
In one interview, Zhang explained that he never limited himself to one role. He believed that when problems appear, people should step forward rather than wait for someone else to fix them.
He later worked briefly at Microsoft, but eventually realized he wanted to build something of his own instead of spending his life inside a large corporation. He launched ByteDance, a startup that would later create TikTok, one of the most influential social media platforms in the world.
Interestingly, Zhang himself was not very active on TikTok in the beginning. He once admitted that he thought the platform was mainly for young users and rarely watched videos himself.
Over time, however, he understood the app’s potential and encouraged employees, including himself, to actively use the platform and understand its audience better.
