Some careers begin with a carefully planned dream. Others unfold unexpectedly and quietly change the course of a life. For Pakistani artist Hina Ashfaq, the spotlight arrived almost by accident, but staying in it has been a conscious choice shaped by resilience, curiosity and self belief. Moving between modeling, commercials and acting, she is learning to define success on her own terms rather than industry expectations. In our exclusive conversation, Hina opens up about growth, criticism, creative freedom and the journey of discovering who she truly is both on and off screen.
How did your journey into showbiz begin, and what first drew you to the spotlight?
Hina: My modeling journey was actually unplanned. I originally wanted to become a fashion designer, but I somehow landed in commercials, and that’s where everything began. I also participated in a beauty contest where I made it to the top seven, but the real spotlight came after my first billboard campaign.
What has acting taught you about yourself that modeling never did?
Hina: Acting helped me discover myself on a much deeper level. Modeling is about expression through presence, body language and visuals, but acting requires emotional understanding and vulnerability. It pushed me to explore perspectives different from my own. I realized how adaptable I am and how much I enjoy stepping outside my comfort zone to experience different personalities and emotions.
Which recent role challenged you the most as a performer?
Hina: My recent drama Qafas challenged me the most because the character was completely different from who I am in real life. It gave me the opportunity to experiment and stretch my acting abilities. Playing someone so unlike myself was both demanding and rewarding, and I truly enjoyed the learning process that came with it.
Is there a character or story you are still waiting to tell on screen?
Hina: Absolutely. I would love to portray a strong, independent woman whose story highlights realities and struggles that are often overlooked in conventional scripts. I believe audiences connect deeply with authentic storytelling, and I hope to be part of projects that reflect real challenges faced by women today.
What feels more creatively fulfilling for you right now: acting or modeling?
Hina: I really enjoy commercials because they offer creative freedom and allow experimentation with different concepts within a short time frame. Modeling is also fun and artistic, and I still love that space. Acting, however, depends entirely on the character. I enjoy switching between mediums because each allows me to explore a different creative side of myself.
Have you ever struggled with being judged or misunderstood because of bold photoshoots? How do you handle criticism?
Hina: I’ve always been careful about choosing my work, but judgment is inevitable when you’re in the public eye. Early in my career, I faced criticism about my height and even my weight. Over time, I understood that criticism comes with the profession. I’ve learned to focus on my work and ignore unnecessary negativity.
In an influencer-driven era, has it become harder for serious performers to find meaningful opportunities?
Hina: Social media has definitely transformed the industry. In some ways, the traditional value of modeling has shifted, but opportunities have expanded. Earlier, work options were limited, whereas now there are far more platforms and projects available. Artists simply need to adapt to the evolving landscape.
Have you encountered nepotism or gatekeeping while building your career independently?
Hina: Yes, nepotism and gatekeeping exist to some degree in every industry, including ours. Instead of focusing on comparisons, I chose to build my own path independently. Consistency and hard work eventually speak louder than anything else.
Which director or actor is on your collaboration wish list?
Hina: Among directors, I admire Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Bilal Lashari and Nabeel Qureshi. As for actors, sharing the screen with Saba Qamar, Fawad Khan and Fahad Mustafa would be an exciting experience.
Outside of work, what keeps you grounded and creatively inspired?
Hina: Spending time alone helps me stay balanced and reconnect with myself. I enjoy exploring new hobbies every few months because learning something new keeps me energized and positive. Nature, animals and meaningful activities play an important role in keeping me grounded. I also draw inspiration from observing people, everyday emotions and real-life situations.
