The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF)/flash floods alert for Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, amid predictions of heavy rain.
The PMD has predicted intermittent rain with heavy falls and snowfall over the mountains in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Shangla, Buner, Kohistan, Malakand, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Balakot, Haripur, Mardan, Nowshera, Peshawar, Kurram, Swabi, Charsadda, Kohat, Hangu, Karak, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Tank, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Dera Ismail Khan and Waziristan from April 1 to April 4.
The similar weather conditions are also predicted in Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Guanche, and Shigar during the period.
During this period, scattered rainfall and thunderstorms, including isolated heavy downpours, are likely to affect Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
“These prevailing weather conditions may elevate the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), flash floods, and landslides in susceptible glaciated areas”, reads an alert issued by the PMD.
“All concerned are advised to remain alert and take necessary measures to avoid any untoward situation”, the alert further read.
