PPP marked its 58th Foundation Day on Sunday with commemorative events in different parts of the country, celebrating a political journey rooted in sacrifice, democratic struggle and an unwavering commitment to the marginalised.
The day served not only as a tribute to the party’s founders but also as a reminder of PPP’s enduring presence in Pakistan’s political landscape.
Few figures in Pakistan’s history have shaped the nation’s democratic consciousness as profoundly as late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and his distinguished daughter late Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. Their courage in confronting authoritarian rule and their sacrifices for restoration of democracy remain central to PPP’s identity. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto gave Pakistan its first consensus Constitution, empowered workers and peasants, strengthened the federation and laid foundations of the country’s nuclear programme. Benazir Bhutto, through resilience and unmatched political maturity, became a global symbol of democratic resistance and women’s empowerment. Their legacy continues to inspire millions.President Asif Ali Zardari repeated emphasis on political reconciliation deserves appreciation, for politics of polarisation has only weakened the country and hindered its economic recovery. Yet, as PPP celebrates its rich legacy, it must also reflect on its contemporary political challenges. Once regarded as true symbol of the federationwith deep roots in all provincesthe party today finds its electoral strength largely confined to one province. It must reinvigorate its organisational structure in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunhwa, engage with young voters and present a clear and practical progressive economic narrative that resonates with their aspirations.If the PPP can couple its historic strengths with renewed political outreach, it can once again emerge as the national force it was destined to be.
