KARACHI – Renowned television actress Naima Khan has revealed that celebrated writer and playwright Ashfaq Ahmed was her maternal uncle.
The actress made the revelation during her recent appearance on a private TV show hosted by Wasi Shah, where she responded to a range of personal and professional questions.
During the conversation, Naima Khan shared that, “Ashfaq Ahmed was related to me as my mother’s cousin. I spent much of my childhood in his lap.”
She recalled a memorable interaction from her youth, saying, “When I expressed my interest in joining the entertainment industry and asked for his recommendation, he told me, ‘If I send you, they’ll even accept garbage from me — but then you’ll forever carry the label of a recommendation. Pursue acting on your own merit. Once you make a name for yourself, tell them you’re Ashfaq Ahmed’s niece.’”
Naima Khan further revealed that Ashfaq Ahmed rarely attended weddings, as he believed his presence often diverted attention from the main event. “However, he made an exception and attended my wedding anniversary celebration,” she added.
The actress grew emotional while sharing a personal regret, recalling his last wish: “Before his passing, Ashfaq Ahmed had asked me to host a small gathering at my home where we would serve lassi and different varieties of mangoes. Unfortunately, I went on vacation to England with my children during that time, and he passed away before I could fulfil his wish. I still regret not being able to honour it.”
