The Karachi administration has enforced a ban on pillion riding in the city’s South and Central districts due to security concerns. A notification stated that public gatherings, rallies, and processions are also prohibited in District South on December 10 and 11. Additionally, gatherings of more than five people are restricted under these measures. The move follows a similar ban implemented in Karachi’s Central District on Monday, where Section 144 of the Criminal Code of Procedure was imposed for two days, effective until December 11.
The ban prohibits pillion riding of motorcycles and scooters, as well as the carrying of arms. The notification highlighted that the restrictions were necessary to prevent potential disturbances to the law and order situation, adding that “miscreants can disturb the law and order situation in the area, hence, Section 144 has been imposed to evade any untoward situation.” Police have arrested 15 individuals for violating the pillion riding ban in District Central. The measures are part of heightened efforts by the authorities to maintain peace and security in Karachi.
